Nomad Drive where is the shovel: Check the Attic
One player found the Nomad Drive shovel in the starter house attic after missing it for several runs. Where to look and how to dig up chests.

Table of Contents
If you want the short version: a Nomad Drive player has reported finding the shovel in the attic of the starter house. It is not sitting in the obvious rooms downstairs, and at least one experienced player went several demo runs without ever noticing the attic existed at all.
Where the shovel showed up
In a third playthrough of the demo, a YouTuber finally found the shovel while clearing the starting house — upstairs in an attic space he had been walking past without realising it was there. The tip came from viewers, not from him, which tells you how easy the spot is to miss. The same attic also held seeds, so it is worth a full sweep once you are up there rather than grabbing one item and leaving.
Two caveats worth keeping in mind:
- The player had missed the attic on earlier runs, so it is not clear whether the shovel always spawns there or whether it is part of the randomized loot pool.
- Nomad Drive rolls different loot per seed. Another demo player found a metal detector but never a shovel across multiple runs, and called out that having the two items at the same time had simply never happened for him before.
So treat the attic as a reported spot, not a confirmed spawn.

Why the shovel is hard to pin down
Nomad Drive hands out loot randomly, and the demo's points of interest (storage crates, watchtowers, bus stops, gas stations, rundown houses) do not all spawn the same contents on a given seed. That means two players can put in comparable hours and end up with completely different inventories. One of the two accounts behind this page spent an entire episode with a metal detector and no way to use it, while the other had a shovel and could dig up chests.
If you are doing a fresh start anyway, clear the starter house properly before you leave: go room by room, and look up. The attic is the single reported difference between "I have a metal detector and nothing to do with it" and "I can dig."
How the shovel pairs with the metal detector
The shovel is the digging tool for buried treasure chests. The loop reported in the demo:
- Carry the metal detector and walk a likely area. The beeping speeds up as you close in; a very rapid, almost steady tone means you are essentially on top of the spot.
- Dig with the shovel at that spot. One player dug slightly off the signal and had to adjust before the chest appeared.
- Bring a key. Chests are locked, and the key is consumed to open them.
- Expect random contents. Reported pulls include a drumstick, a license plate, spray paint, a radiator and a backpack — sometimes useful, sometimes not.
Both chests a player found on one run were right around the starting house and a nearby container stop, so the starter area is a reasonable first sweep once you have both tools.
Keys are close to worthless without a shovel, and both players ended up carrying several they could not spend. If you are short on inventory room in the van, keys are the thing you can afford to leave behind until a shovel turns up.

Practical tips
- Do not skip the starter house attic on a fresh start, especially after a demo patch. The developers' patch notes, as quoted by one of the players, warned that carrying old saves forward could behave oddly, which is why both playthroughs here began from scratch.
- If the attic is empty, keep checking points of interest. Loot is randomized, and a run without a shovel is a normal outcome rather than a sign you are looking in the wrong place.
- Keep the metal detector with you even before you find a shovel. It costs nothing to sweep an area, and the beeping will tell you where to come back once you have something to dig with.
- Crates found in the world are the practical way to carry a chest haul back to the van.
Version notes
Both accounts come from the Nomad Drive demo, which has been updated repeatedly and does not always play the same from patch to patch — treat the exact attic spawn as demo-reported rather than a permanent fixture. Nomad Drive's developer has not published an official shovel location as of 2026-10-16. The game itself is on Steam.
