Short answer: in the Nomad Drive demo, treasure hunting is a tool-based side activity, not a marker you simply drive to. One player's demo run shows the loop as: carry a metal detector, drive the procedurally generated world until a treasure spot turns up, dig it with a shovel, and open the chest with one of the keys you have been collecting. The same footage also shows why it can feel like a bad trade — treasure sites and buildings can despawn mid-drive, and the fuel spent looking for them is very real.

This page is built around one player's demo playthrough, Treasure Hunt – Nomad Drive (Episode 3), which you can watch here: Treasure Hunt – Nomad Drive, Episode 3

The loop, as one demo player ran it

The video's author describes the episode as treasure hunting with a metal detector, and that matches what happens on screen. There is no visible quest marker or map pin to follow; the detector is what turns a stretch of desert into a dig site. When a spot does come up, the reward sits in the ground as a chest — in this run, literally a pirate chest in the middle of the desert — and digging it out takes a shovel.

The shovel was not something he started with. He looted a house earlier in the run, found a shovel there, and had to go back for it once he had a site worth digging. So a practical reading of that run is: find the shovel first, then go looking.

Keys matter too, and this is the part that confuses new players. He picks up key after key at points of interest without knowing what they unlock, and openly says he has no idea why he is collecting them. Then, at the chest: "at least we can finally use one of those keys now." Keys are the chest-opener, and the chest is where they finally pay off.

One more detail worth knowing: his checks were not always successful. He pulled up to a promising spot, asked whether there was a treasure there, and found nothing. The takeaway is that not every likely-looking patch of desert has something under it.

Tips that come out of that run

Fuel is the real cost of treasure hunting. Most of the tension in the episode comes from a dwindling tank, not from danger. He takes a detour to check a site with the fuel gauge already low and has to break off to hunt for petroleum. If you are planning a treasure run, fill up first and treat the search radius as a fuel decision, not a sightseeing one.

Load the RV properly before you leave. Partway through, he repeatedly regrets leaving a specific item behind that would have made the trip easier. Whatever your own setup looks like, the pattern is the same: once you are out in the desert, going back for a forgotten tool costs fuel and time.

Expect sites to vanish. In this build, a house he was heading toward despawned in front of him, and later a treasure despawned too. He calls it glitchy and "super trippy." If you are approaching something interesting, it is worth noting your direction and distance before you commit to a long approach — a suggestion based on what happened in this run rather than a tested workaround.

Keep expectations modest on long detours. After a fuel-hungry trip and a despawn, the player's own verdict is that digging up more treasures "doesn't seem worth it." That is one player's opinion on one demo session, not a statement about the full game's balance — but it is a fair warning that treasure hunting competes with basic survival for your fuel budget.

Scope and version notes

Everything above comes from demo footage: Episode 3, played on PC in 4K, with the world described as procedurally generated. The video's description says a demo is available for Microsoft Windows / PC on Steam and that full release is planned for Q3 2026. Treasure behaviour, spawn rates, and despawning bugs are exactly the kind of thing that can change between a demo build and launch, so treat the specifics here as demo-era observations rather than a permanent system description.

You can check the current platform and release information yourself on the official Nomad Drive Steam page.
